Long Island School Districts Turn To Island Strategies Lobbying Team

Uniondale, Long Island, New York, December 1, 2006

Two Long Island school districts have engaged the Island Strategies government relations team to assist them with state issues and help them obtain specific grants for programs.  The Brentwood School District has asked former Assembly Ways and Means Chairman Arthur "Jerry" Kremer to assist them during 2007 in gaining funding for a series of special programs.

Brentwood is the largest school district outside of the City of New York, only smaller than some upstate cities such as Syracuse, Rochester and Albany.  With 17,500 students, Brentwood faces multiple problems educating a diverse population and keeping up with districts that get more dollar aid because of issues in the current school aid formula.

The Three Village School District, a district that suffers from a large amount of tax-exempt property, due to the presence of the State University of Stony Brook, will be retaining Island Strategies for the second year in a row.  Kremer, working with Keith Fink, son of the late Speaker Stanley Fink, was able to obtain in excess of $700,000 in special categorical aid for the district during the year 2006.

On top of the special grants with the strong help of Senator John Flanagan and Assemblyman Steven Englebright, Kremer was able to approval of a law which will give the district the real property taxes lost as the result of the condemnation of the Gyrodene property by the university.

The passage of the Gyrodene law marks the first time in the history of the state that the legislature has required the state university to reimburse a local community for lost taxes.  "I am very proud that we were able to build a coalition of parents and taxpayers who helped convince the Governor that this was the right thing to do," Kremer said.
